Grand Army Plaza - Living Room

"The inspiration for this project was the building itself and the strange shape of the room. The launching point was the two pieces that started the overall design: the coffee table and the shelving unit. There is a large column right in front of the window that we built the shelving unit around. Figuring that part out was tricky. I wanted to take advantage of the beautiful windows, which previously had a lot of things in front of them, including track lighting. I wanted to open that up so that it could feel like they are living on the inside and the outside at the same time." —Elizabeth Mercer

"Their children are still drawing and making things and crafting, the coffee table is a large surface for that kind of work and has the cubbies underneath. We were searching for marble for another project and found this crumbling off-cut that happened to be split in a way that almost perfectly mimicked the shape of the coffee table. I took it to be polished and added some little feet on the bottom to protect the table and make it easier to pick up. Although we generally think of stone and marble as a cold element, it added a level of warmth that was really perfect. " —Elizabeth Mercer

While we all try not to bring our work into the bedroom, some of our most creative thoughts occur when we are relaxed. Having a dedicated place to doodle, journal, write or, let’s face it, tap out a quick email, is a bonus if you’ve got the space. The industrial elements of the desk relate to the nightstands while remaining a somewhat separate space. A leather and hemp blotter protects both the aluminum-framed laptop and the glass tabletop.

A couple that is as physically active, hard-working, and jet-setting as this duo necessitates a haven of maximum comfort. With a sound-absorbing velvet-upholstered headboard (made without toxic flame-retardant chemicals), champagne-colored velvet quilt and sham, and 500 thread count organic pima sateen sheets, “slipping” in to bed has never been more literal. A supersoft rug underfoot is a must with hard flooring in a bedroom, coupled with energy-saving radiant heat under wood-look tile, even getting out of bed can be a touch easier.

Although the large walk-in closet has plenty of storage for two, not all items need live in a closet. We sourced a wall-mounted dresser featuring linear leather drawer pulls to keep an uncluttered and streamlined look. The artwork features fly ties on handmade paper sourced from a boutique in Narrowsburg, NY.

The closet got a serious storage upgrade. We opened it up as a walk-through to the bathroom but wanted to keep a tidy look. With custom carpentry, we were able to fit more hanging, shoes, bags, and plenty of bonus drawers than the previously installed wire shelving. The wood-look tile with radiant heat is continued through the master closet where an abundance of storage is tucked behind shaker doors. A marble countertop for staging outfits and accessories is made of the same material as the master bath vanity. An accent wall was created with Lindsay Cowles grasscloth wallpaper. Client's thoughts on the master bedroom wallpaper: “I loved the process of looking at this artist’s portfolio of patterns and allowing myself to be drawn into something that surprises me. It’s kind of glam. It’s NOT neutral and not something I thought would be for me. I love it so much and it’s a surprising detail. It allows for me to recognize parts of me that still surprise me.”

Brooklyn Kitchen

We were asked to create an organized, light and bright kitchen for a food writer and her family. To do this, we removed the interior wall that blocked the kitchen off from the living room, did away with all wall cabinets on the right side for a clear view to the window and kept our palette light and airy to achieve this feeling. The kitchen now has far more cabinet space to organize everything an enthusiastic cook could need as well as a long shelf for lots of cook books. We also created a very slim cabinet to the left of the refrigerator for a stick vac and cleaning supplies.

President Street Living Room

This request was for living room storage that would hold a range of adult and children's belongings. The living room was home to the office as well as the usual elements of television and hangout space. The client was afraid to go too big with a custom built-in storage unit as she did not want the space to feel smaller. The opposite is always true of built-ins as the newly found organization and ability to store all of the bits away opens up the space completely. We also wanted to incorporate something for the clients’ paintings, as she is an artist as well! She wanted the unit itself to be more than just storage, but visually interesting. We went with two finishes for the unit with the inside painted a rich dark blue, which made the TV recede and allowed the artwork and items on the shelves to pop. We then stained the oak a mid-tone grey for a neutral ground to support the other color and pattern in the room.

Park Slope Sunny Modern Kitchen

Our client requested an overall improved arrangement to her kitchen with a more open, less cluttered feel. She wanted more storage, better quality appliances and the ability to cook and still be connected with family and guests at the same time. We rearranged the gas cooktop to the center island to connect the chef with the inevitable crowd that gathers in a kitchen and positioned the dishwasher next to the sink on the right so that our client could comfortably load without having to reach over an open door. We also added more storage, a Miele steam oven (along with all other appliance upgrades) and a tall narrow bookcase for handy storage of cookbooks or decor. The floor was replaced with large porcelain tiles and the backsplash was injected with color and pattern with painted ceramic tiles.
